  • A leaders’ vulnerability shapes workplace culture and employee well-being by giving their employees permission to do the same.  
  • Leaders shape experience and experience shape culture. Leaders’ actions normalise the behaviour that form culture.
       
• Bridging the disconnect 
  • Based on research jointly conducted by the John Hopkins Carey Business School and Great Place to Work, well-being, workplace culture and experiences have declined from its peak in 2021.  
  • While C-suites' well-being was observed to be quite stable, a sharp decline was observed for frontline staff and managers. 
  • Leaders feel they are doing a great job at well-being, yet there’s a massive disconnect with what their employees actually feel. This is the heart of the difference between action and words. 
    
    
• Well-being practices:  
  • Personal strategies from the panelists, including wellness perks, burnout recovery, and enforcing healthy work-life boundaries. 
  • The role of a manager has greatly evolved. A manager is expected to be a functional coach, a mentor, and to also take care of their team members’ well-being. 
  • Managers must be enabled to take care of themselves, before they are able to take care of their team members. 
    
    
• DEI beyond compliance 
  • The new Workplace Fairness Legislation will come into force in 2025 which will broaden the definition of inclusivity to cover areas such as family status, age and mental health.  
  • With the new legislation, there will be penalties for non-compliance. So, it now presents a business risk to get DEI right in an organisation.   
  • The legislation is a watershed moment, as what were previously guidelines will now become mandatory. This will provide a good starting point for companies to think beyond mere compliance to genuine inclusion.
